12th June. Litchfield National park.

Happy 18th Birthday Mark Lantz. A major day in your life, please enjoy and then remember it with pleasure and no regrets.
Another lovely Sunday to give thanks & praise to our Heavenly Father. We have beautiful sunshine, an air conditioner and opportunity to travel.
This morning we went to Adelaide River, 30k south to visit the the War Cemetery, we had intended to go there in our way here but 'just didn't'. Now we know why. There were a lot of motorbikes following us & as we parked, I counted 37, they were followed by a Hearst. We had parked because a road block stated 'Event in progress' some of you will know that 33 bodies have only just been returned to Australia from Vietnam, one of these was from this area and this was his funeral with full Military Honours. All Services were represented including some USA Military. The female soldier who played the last post was perfect.
And the band played the National Anthem
It was a very moving occasion and in such a significant location.
After the bombing of Darwin in WW11 the Military HQ were stationed here and thousands of service personnel here. There are 434 service personnel buried here as well as 63 civilians due to the bombing of Darwin.
Being a long weekend, there was a market on with local produce and handcrafts. Here is one for you Liz Smith.
It was also Show weekend and today they had a Rodeo. There is no sign of a town, just petrol, pub, caravan park, general store, railway museum because of the significance of the rail between Adelaida SA and Darwin, and a very beautiful river that you can cruise down. Those photos were on a previous blog entry.
There was a Roadtrain Parked beside the market........64 wheels!

Now let me return to yesterday.
We set off for a visit to the Litchfield national park, it's 20k to Batchelor then another 30k to the actual park. The scenery doesn't change as you enter the park it looks like this
The big dark 'thing' in the middle is a termite mound! the palms are all short and the scrubby trees are not big. Some areas there are LOTS of termite mounds and some areas that are few of the palm tree/ bushes. Our first turn in was to Rum Jungle Lake, but it was fenced off due to low water level. On to Rum Jungle Uranium mine which was closed in the early 1970's. It is well fenced off and no word of Uranium.
On then to Magnetic Termite Mounds, an area with hundreds of termite mounds standing up to 2 metres high. The narrow  edges point north-south minimising their exposure to the sun. They are something that withstand the wet season flooding and the dry season burn off of undergrowth. We have seen quite a bit of smoke a even some smouldering areas.
Most fascinating.
Next stop was Buler Rock Pools, with lots of people enjoying the water.

Our next and last stop was Florence Falls, the sign said 1.2k down to the falls. (NO WAY HOSEA)  Brian went down and then up the 354 steps to complete the round track!!! He is doing marvellous. I watched the 'passing parade' and noted a number taking a different route, saw a sign that said 120 meters to a viewing platform!!!!. It was spectacular. Brian had taken my iPad to get photos for me & he did a great job.

The ones I took on my phone were just like this last one.
Late in the day the man in the van next to us needed an electrician, the truck arrived and this was the the Electrician!
I will climb up the hill to the reception area ( one must call it an area, just Tim with his clip board, a TV and some table & chairs under a tin roof. No credit card machine, cash only) and I hope to be able to post this there as its higher ground.
Tomorrow it on to Darwin.
